Hearing the Word!

By | Blog | No Comments

Sunday we talked about taking time to listen to good preaching as a way to become Word-filled people. Here are a few preachers that I like to listen to when I can: Dave Doran – Dave is a pastor at Inter-City Baptist Church in a suburb of Detroit. Dave carefully preaches the Word with a clear pastoral heart. You can find many of his sermons here. Tim Jordan – Tim is a pastor at Calvary Baptist Church in Lansdale Pennsylvania. Tim brings the Word into every day life like none other. You can find sermons preached at his church here….

My South African Brother

By | Blog | No Comments

I only have seen him five days of my life: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. We sat next to each other for five and half hours each of those days though we said very little to each other. A few breaks between lectures provided opportunities to find out a little bit about our families, backgrounds, likes, dislikes, and ministries. Surprisingly we had a lot in common. He is almost exactly my age, is married, has three children who are close in age to mine who are spaced apart about the same distance, is a pastor, is pursuing further theological…

Love for the Church

By | Blog | No Comments

I love the church. By this I do not mean that I love the whole church of God which is made up of all believers everywhere though I certainly do love all of God’s redeemed people. I love the local church. There are many reasons why I love the church but one that stands out in my own mind recently is how the church transforms my relationships. In Philippians 4:2-3, Paul writes to the believers of the local church in Philippi and says “I implore Euodia and I implore Syntyche to be of the same mind in the Lord. And I…

Time to Celebrate???

Should Christians Celebrate the Death of Osama bin Laden? I watched President Obama’s brief speech on Sunday night with eager interest as he delivered the news that United States forces had killed Osama bin Laden. The President showed great class and care in delivering the sober news of the death of a great enemy of the U.S. While the President was giving this news, outside the gates of the White House a large crowd was gathering to celebrate what the U.S. had accomplished. At one point a large part of the crowd broke into chants of glee using a harsh and…

Beautiful Words

By | Blog | No Comments

Recently a friend of mine posted an update on their Facebook status that simply quoted John 6:39 which states “This is the will of the Father who sent Me, that of all He has given Me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day.” I read that verse and thought about it for several minutes. To me, those words from John 6:39 are beautiful words because it shows how different Jesus and I are. Jesus doesn’t lose anything. I lose so many things. Some things I lose are not that important like a book or a…

The Passing of a Saint

By | Blog | No Comments

Probably nothing in life brings more tension than the thought of life ending. Death brings with it many fears, many unknowns, and many tears. As a result, most people avoid thinking seriously about death because for them to do so would bring great trials of their own souls. They would actually have to face those fears, unknowns, and tears head on. Therefore, some joke about death, some think only of their legacy, and some use the cares of this present life to drown out any thoughts of their final passing. Christians think and feel very differently about death. There are…
